TES Theatre is one of the very few weekday kids’ theatre programs in Vancouver, where young people who have flexible school schedules, or who don’t attend school, can benefit from the weekday classes. We often receive requests to add an after-school program to our class offerings, so kids who attend regular, daytime schools could experience our programs as well.
While after-school hours programs are not in our immediate future, one solution is to check out TES Theatre’s Summer Camps.
Every summer, we offer two weeks of summer camp. Usually the first week is aimed at a younger crowd, where 5 – 8 year olds can attend for half days (10am – 12pm), and 8 – 14 year olds can stay the whole day (10am – 3pm). We do fun theatre games and ice-breaking activities in the mornings, and then shift gears in the afternoon, creating a performance to showcase our new acts to family members on the final day. This is a really fun week with zero pressure. The tone is lively, upbeat, full of laughter…it’s a great opportunity to make friends and get playful with musical theatre. TES Theatre programs always include skills development, but the emphasis of this camp is on fun.
The second camp caters to a more mature crowd, 12 – 18 years old, and offers more of a professional approach. While still fun, and still social, this camp has an increased focus on skills and performance, and building a more thoughtful showcase for the final afternoon. This camp is fantastic for tweens and teens to dip their toes, or wade deep, into musical theatre in a safe and welcoming, thoroughly inclusive environment. It’s a great way to meet other teens.
Theatre has so many benefits for kids, these summer camps are a low-commitment way to give young people a small dose. Both of these engaging summer camps provide a unique opportunity to try TES Theatre, to explore the program without the yearlong commitment. They offer a way for full-time school kids to get a taste of TES Theatre, and for non-theatre kids to see what they’re missing.
